As a young adult, Ruby marveled at the careers of her uncle, Timothy Crawford, Esq., who maintained his very own practice for over thirty years in Philadelphia, PA and her aunt, Patricia King, who was the first African American female attorney in Charlotte NC. Through them she was able to connect with famed attorneys, Willie Gary and O.T. Wells who instilled in her that being an attorney was more than just the degree but the vehicle to become the voice of those in need of justice.
Ruby finished Spelman College with a Bachelors of Science in 1995. After graduating from Spelman College, she worked for Primetime Omnimedia, a strategic marketing company that serviced clients such as Michael Lee Chin, Ted Turner, Russell Simmons, and various other high profiled clients until she entered The University of South Carolina School of Law in 1996. Ruby received a Juris Doctorate Degree from The University of South Carolina School of Law in 1999.
Her husband, Ford Sawyer Cooper, is an orthodontist with practices in Charlotte NC, Rock Hill SC, and Spartanburg SC, and they were married a week after she graduated from law school. The couple recently celebrated their fourteenth anniversary. The Lord has blessed them with three beautiful children, Ford Jr., Riley Elizabeth, and Elle Carole. Their children mean the world to them and are truly the source of their joy and laughter.
Ruby is proud to share her own law firm, Nesmith Rucker LLP, with her fellow Spelman sister, Erica Nesmith, in Charlotte, NC. While the days of her family's reality series, Love Thy Sister, on WEtv has come to an end, she plans to make her way back to the silver screen very soon. Ruby definitely has her plate full but still makes time for her family, reading, cooking, exercising and volunteering at various organizations that support education.
